The latest trend in self service are these food “Bazaars.” Having never been to one, here’s how it went.
It was breakfast time, so I wandered around until I found something resembling breakfast food. Instead of interacting with customers, they now expect us to put our grubby hands on a tablet where everyone else’s grubby hands have been, providing everyone with an excellent way to spread disease.
The lady behind the counter kept mumbling to herself about the orders, so when she mumbled something about my order, I had no idea she was actually addressing me. After I didn’t move, she finally looked at me and loudly stated “pay at the self-pay area and come back so I can start your order!” Ah, thanks. So, I wandered around until I found a drink, then did my best to pay the bill. It didn’t like my card. Try again two or three times and success!
Then I wandered back to wait for my food. Overall, it was decent fare. The eggs came from real chickens, the pancake was fresh off the griddle, and the sausage had decent flavor. Not the best, but I’ve had much worse.
Now we’re about to board. Here’s hoping the flight home is as nice as the flight to Newark.

I haven’t seen this yet. My main air ports are SEATAC, SLC, SJC, SMF, and PDX so I guess it’s only a mater of time.

I liked the airports I was in when I was abroad because they had similar setups. Dublin had a few restaurants that were like cafeterias . There were self serve islands as well as counters where they’d assemble a plate of hot food f or you. Get what you want, pay, and grab a seat. Heathrow had a cool little grocery store type thing. Grab prepacked meals and snacks and then go to the self checkouts. It was nice to not wait in line to order f or 20 minutes like in so many American restaurants.

I was just thinking if you every fly through Minneapolis, they have a self serve buffet and you pay by weight. The food is pretty good and I don’t think I’ve ever payed more than $10 for a large meal.

I’m getting pretty fat, so I’m not sure I want to pay by weight at a buffet. Seems fair, though.

I’m frankly surprised it didn’t happen sooner. I mean we had touch screen ordering in my dorm cafe in 2001. Especially as more places pass $15 minimum wage laws, the appeal of the machines is only going to get stronger (though there are bunch of benefits beyond the cost factor).

Several of my local grocers have that. It’s hit or miss on the food quality.

That’s better than this setup. Her you have to order food, go pay for food, come back and wait for food....
